Academics
All boys undertake the following subjects, leading to either the Common Entrance or Scholarship examinations to senior schools at 13+:
- English (including Literature)
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Biology
- I.C.T.
- French (including Oral and Aural work)
- Latin
- History
- Geography
- Religious Studies
- Ancient Greek (optional in years 7 and 8)
In addition, within the timetable, all boys have the following classes:
- Art
- Music
- Physical Education
Personal, Social and Health Education (P.S.H.E.) is covered in a series of talks in Assembly followed by group discussion.
In Year 7 a sub-set operates for those who will ultimately be sitting Scholarship examinations. In Year 8 there is a dedicated class for Scholarship candidates. Where necessary, individual or small group extra tuition in main subjects can be arranged. There is no extra charge for this.
Academic performance is monitored in regular Assessments and bi-annual examinations. In Year 8 there are four sets of trial examinations.
From the moment the boys arrive at Sussex House they are taught by subject specialists. Form teachers have pastoral oversight of a class but usually only teach the class for one subject.
The Registrar offers a full advisory service on the choice of senior schools and appointments can be booked to discuss a boy’s progress and choice of next school.
